This photograph was taken around 1954-55 of the Montgomery County Police Station on Georgia Avenue in downtown Silver Spring (that is the still extant Silver Spring Shopping Center in the background). I assume the Evening Star #35 was a radio-equipped reporter's car. Any additional information about what must have been a fleet of these vehicles (or photos of this police station) are welcome!

The Clifford K. & James T. Berryman Award was "endowed in 1989 by Florence Berryman, former art critic of the Washington Star in memory of her late father and brother, both of whom were Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonists," the Press Foundation says. The foundation's 29th Annual Awards Dinner will be March 7 at the Hilton in Northwest Washington, D.C.

Lance Gay was given a good send off today at a memorial service in a beautiful Baptist church in DC. Speakers included his daughters, his brother, Scripps Howard colleagues, and members of his poker club. Thanks to Phil Kadis for speaking as a Star rep. If you hadn't known Lance, the tributes would sure have made you wished you had.

Name that food writer. I have received this request from a reader:
Hi, thank goodness for this Web site! My memory has turned up the pseudonym of a columnist who wrote for The Washington Star. His columns were very humorous and enjoyable and often dealt with the subject of food. He called himself "Trimalchio." Who was he, really? Do you know? If you do, whatever happened to him?

Would much appreciate receiving any information you have on the subject.

Thank you,

D. M. Read

from Nancy Ferris - Some of Lance's Scripps-Howard colleagues plan to gather at a bar/restaurant near the church after the funeral and have invited Star folks to join them. The place is Agora, on 17th St. NW between P and Q streets. It reportedly has a cool bar and serves small plates (tapas) of Mediterranean food. Christi Harlan, who lives in the neighborhood, has arranged to hold the bar for Lance's friends from 12:45 on, although some may arrive earlier.
